Automated and autonomous laboratories emerge through evolution rather than disruption. This talk outlines how traditional laboratory workflows can be incrementally extended using guided workflows, advanced sample tracking, and collaborative automation technologies, including cobots. Based on co-creation activities with customers and a network of automation and technology partners, we illustrate how instruments, data, and people can be progressively connected. Examples from Agilent’s automation portfolio highlight a stepwise approach that supports the transition from established lab practices toward increasingly digital and autonomous laboratory concepts.
